Criss Angel – We’re Kind of Over It

Criss Angel with One Time Squeeze, Holly MadisonThis may be apostasy or just dumb politics but a recent in-house poll of the Inside Magic staff reveals we’re over Criss Angel.

This regretful admission comes on news of Criss Angel’s purchase of a $25,000,000.00 home and plans for the next Mindfreak season.

Could we be vaguer in our description?

Is “vaguer” a word?

At one time, we thought Criss Angel was doing great things for Magic and while we were not big fans of hanging by meat hooks as performance art, we respected his willingness to try new directions.

We were psyched he hired so many talented magicians as he readied his Mindfreak show. Johnny Thompson, Banachek, Steve Daly, Milt Larsen and others. They were the real deal, folks who know our art and have experience in big theaters and small close-up venues.

Yes, Mr. Angel’s use of the camera trickery was unfortunate but to paraphrase Chinatown, “It’s Hollywood, Jake.” We pretended not to care. Still, Houdini did not use camera tricks – even when he was filming his own stunts for the Houdini Motion Picture Company. There is no evidence that Robert-Houdin used video editing either.

There could be an argument made that David Copperfield has used cameras in a less than transparent manner, but his choice of a camera’s point of view or field of vision pales in comparison to the Criss Angel method.

We refused to contemplate too deeply the serial dating of starlets and wannabes proclaiming his undying love for each publicly with the abandon we normally associate with teen crushes.

Lance Burton Interview: Retirement, Criss Angel

Lance Burton Agrees to Stay with Monte Carlo for Six More Years! The Las Vegas Weekly interviewed Master Magician Lance Burton for their “A Few Minutes With . . .” feature today.
The piece is very short but to the point. You can read his thoughts on retirement, Criss Angel, innovation in magic, and what today’s audiences expect from a “magic show.”
In case it is not obvious, we worship Lance Burton and are delighted he decided to stay at the appropriately named Lance Burton Theater in the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino.
Mr. Burton brings more than a great show to Las Vegas, he brings his compassion and willingness to help others through his own charities or the work of others.

19 Year-Old Inventor Sues Criss Angel

jacob spinneyMagician and inventor Jacob Spinney filed suit against Criss Angel on June 8, 2009 claiming Mr.  Angel renigned on a promise to pay for rights to Spinney’s Chair Self-Levitation, Spinney’s Chair Self-Suspension and Spinney’s Fork-Bending gimmicks.

You can download a copy of the complaint from Inside Magic here.

Mr. Spinney filed his eight-count complaint against Criss Angel in Nassau County, New York, home of Angel Productions, Incorporated.

According to the complaint, in 2004, Mr. Angel asked Murphy’s Magic Supplies for  “illusions or magical effects” to be used in this upcoming MindFreak television series.

Murphy’s referred Criss Angel to teenage inventor Jacob Spinney.  The two spoke, and Angel offered Spinney a position as “Magic Consultant” on the upcoming series.

Criss Angel Loses Girl Gets Bike

criss-angel-believeCriss Angel lost a girlfriend but gained a motorcycle.

According to Robin Leach’s Luxe Life,  Criss Angel gets a new motorcycle at the start of each season of Mindfreak.

The show is entering the fifth season on A & E this fall.

When Criss first saw the jet-black bike as the covers were pulled back, he was stunned, and all he could say was “wow, wow, wow,” according to Motorcycle USA Cruiser Editor Bryan Harley.

One of Criss’s team told me: “He unveils a new bike at the beginning of each new season, and it gets used in several of the illusions. Criss also had a custom-designed bike to reflect his Believe show at the Luxor and a third, which was more of a classic. The official Mindfreak bike will be on display at the Luxor throughout the Season 5 filming.”

All Ed Alonzo – All Day

Ed Alonzo is the Go-To Guy!Yesterday was Ed Alonzo Day at the Magic Double-Wide we call home here in Mystic Hollow, Michigan.

We were cruising the web and getting up to date on all things magic when we read Inside Magic Favorite, Ed Alonzo will create the magic for Michael Jackson’s 50-date run in London.

Wow, that says a lot for both Ed Alonzo and Michael Jackson.

Ed Alonzo is famous within the world of magic, but is not yet a household name like David Copperfield, Li’l Tom Hardy, or Criss Angel.

Plus, he seems profoundly normal and decent.   There were no rumors of his dating or not dating Britney Spears either before or during his current employment with the bombshell that is Ms. Spears.

The postman came by and made some comments about our need to cut back on the magic magazines if we ever hoped to get out of debt.  He held three of our magic journals in one hand and a stack of bills in the other.

We thanked him for his unsolicited advice, slightly whistling through our broken incisor at just the right pitch to summon our playful pit bull – Doberman mix, Big Tom.

“Criss Angel Has to Go!”

Don't Twitter in TheaterRichard Abowitz has a remarkable take on the Criss Angel – Perez Hilton skirmish in the Los Angeles Times.  We use Mr. Abowitz’ column to revisit the whole frakis and consider Norm Clarke’s perspective.

Criss Angel’s $100 million magic show has been running, or according to critics, stumbling at the Luxor Hotel and Casino for the past few months.

Initial reviews were almost universally bad.  Undaunted, Criss Angel and the Cirque du Soleil geniuses have worked to improve the show but according to Mr. Abowitz and Perez Hilton, the work has been in vain.

Jacko Snubs Copperfield for Angel

Michael Jackson Suspension Effect = Gross

There is no accounting for taste.  Michael Jackson has dropped David Copperfield from his upcoming London shows because Mr. Copperfield was “too expensive.”

We are not sure what that says about the rates charged by Criss Angel.

According to Mr. Jackson’s press people, Mr. Copperfield wanted to charge the gloved-one $1 million a show.

Actually, that seems pretty reasonable.  You have to figure that every day he is with Mr. Jackson, Mr. Copperfield is missing out on performing in his own show.   Plus, he has to perform with Mr. Jackson.  That’s got to be worth a cool million.

According to the South African paper The Sun: “Michael was excited about working with David, but they fell out over money. Michael’s delighted to have Criss on board – not least ‘cos he costs less!”

Okey doke.

This is probably not exactly the same but reminds us of how steamed we get when we are underbid for a show by one of our fellow magic club members.  Mr. Copperfield and Criss Angel have two entirely different approaches to magic.  It is hard to believe Mr. Jackson sees the two as fungible elements of his show.

Britney Spears Hooks Up with Ed Alonzo for Tour

Ed Alonzo Ready to Travel with Britney Spears' Circus TourYou know the saying, once you go magic, you never go back.

Britney Spears was seen with bite-marks during her short time with Criss Angel.  We always thought they were love-bites.  Nay, she was apparently bitten by the magic bug.

While the bite marks may have faded, the infection the magic bug deposited took hold and now rules her life; tainting her perception of everything so that she now sees things not as they are but as they could be if done magically.

Ed Alonzo is a real magician who does real magic and knows how to put together a show of quality. Britney is someone looking for a big comeback and hopes her Circus Tour will do the trick. She needed someone like Mr. Alonzo to bring magic literally into the tour.

E! says Ed “The Misfit of Magic” Alonzo. We know about Mr. Alonzo’s considerable talent in our field, but how does Britney fair?

Mr. Alonzo told E!, “Right away she got into the boxes and into the magic contraptions to learn the stuff, and she’s so excited about this tour and all the elements that are in it.”

Ms. Spears performs as Mr. Alonzo’s assistant. They plan to perform classic illusions with a high-tech twist.

What is a “classic illusion”?

Criss Angel Risks Job Says Hobo Joe

criss-angel-and-holly-madisonWe know what you’re thinking.  Didn’t he just start a new job?  Isn’t it somewhat soon to take a vacation?

When we began work at the now famous Hobo Hot Kakes (“HHK” to locals) eatery in the old Sun Coast Shopping Market in West Palm Beach, Florida back in 1974, our family wanted to take a long-planned vacation to Valdosta, Georgia for the annual festival of agriculture and innovation.  This is long before Valdosta became the international city it is today.

Our new boss at HHK said no vacation or no job.  Even though we had a whole ten days tenure on the HHK bus/dishwashing crew, we couldn’t take a vacation until we had worked at least a year.

Our heart told us to go with the family to the Valdosta fest, but our brain said we could be messing up a job with enormous upside potential.  In the end, we stayed while the family went to Valdosta.  They had a great time, we got ringworm — for reasons unrelated to our work washing dishes but directly related to busing tables.

India’s New TV Series Mayalogam is Magic

If Inside Magic was not so firmly ensconced in Mystic Hollow, Michigan, we would pull up the Double Wide O’ Magic and move it to India or Las Vegas — the two hot spots for magic these days.

Vijay TV plans almost non-stop coverage of magic in India for the next little while.   The series Mayalogam will mix celebrities and magicians in a non-stop showcase for India’s top performers.

The premise behind Mayalogam is very cool.

We learned more about the series and the word Mayalogam while surfing The Indya Star website.

Mayalogam is ruled by a pompous but skinny Raja Nakimukki. He is accompanied by his bulbous Rani Minnal Idaiyal who is engrossed with her own beauty with an unquenchable desire to be entertained. They are always accompanied by their dwarf ministers who try their best to entertain the Queen, but fail to do the same.

Apasara Mayakani, the story teller comes to their rescue every week by kidnapping some of the best magicians from the real world to showcase their acts to liven Mayalogam.
