The Whit Haydn Interview

He was chosen by Caesars Palace to be one of the acts to open the $60 million Magical Empire at the Las Vegas Resort. Whit performs regularly on the most prestigious cruise ships including the Queen Elizabeth II, the Norway and the Westerdam. He has opened for Jerry Seinfeld, Loretta Lynn and Gallagher. He consulted and contributed to the Discovery Channel’s documentary, “Houdini – They Came to See Him Die.”

Whit will also appear in a 30-part series on magic for the Canadian Discovery Channel called “Grand Illusions,” and in the PAX Television series “Masters of Illusion.” Speaking of television and film, he has consulted on David Copperfield’s television specials, was the chief magic consultant for the Norman Jewison film “Bogus,” starring Whoopie Goldberg, Gerard Depardieu and Haley Joel Osment.

You may also have enjoyed and learned from Whit’s lecture notes, videotapes and lectures. He is a featured performer and lecturer at conventions and seminars around the world. In his spare time, Whit teaches a popular ‘masters’ course known as the “School for Scoundrels” for magician members of the Magic Castle. This course concerns the famous street swindles the Shell Game, Three-Card Monte, and the Endless Chain—the subject of Whit’s forthcoming book, Unfair Advantage.

I first met Whit while my wife and I were vacationing on the last voyage of the Queen Odyssey. The ship had just been bought by Seaborn from Royal Cruise Lines and the cruise was the transition to the new company. Seaborn was trying to impress the loyal Royal Cruise Line passengers that the new owners could keep up the fine reputation the ship had earned. They hired Whit as the only non-musical act to appear in the main theater and obviously had great confidence in his abilities to impress the crowd they hoped to retain for future voyages. We attended his show and as luck would have it, my wife was invited to join him on stage to perform the Four Ring Routine.

I have seen Whit perform several times since that cruise and have always been impressed by his very natural approach to handling and sleights. When he holds a deck of cards, he holds it as if he is doing only that. He isn’t holding the deck to set up a bottom palm or a second deal. When he displays a knife in his fantastic “The Intricate Web of Distraction,” and explains the history of the term “pen knife,” he looks and acts as if he is doing only that – not setting up a vanish or a change.

Q: How did you get introduced to magic?

My first real experience with magic was watching a Methodist minister perform at a summer camp when I was very young, maybe seven or eight years old. He did standard magic like the rings, cut and restored rope, etc. At one point, he pushed a silk into a pink cone (Abbott’s Bang-Gone) with a wand. When the cone was popped open, the silk was gone.

The kids yelled that the silk was in the wand. After playing with the hecklers for a few moments, he snapped the wand in half and threw the broken dowel pieces to the audience. I was stunned. I would have given my eyeteeth, which were practically new, to own a magic wand, and he broke it just to show the kids were wrong.

I stayed up all night thinking about magic. I wondered what it would mean if you could do real magic, and also, knowing there was no such thing, tried to figure out how he did the tricks. It was probably the first time in my life that I had such a concentrated session of creative thinking. The next morning I awoke in love with all things magic.

From Rachel Colombini

Inside Magic Image of Aldo and Rachel ColombiniWe received this very moving note from Rachel Colombini via Maria Ibâñez’ Have You Heard newsletter. Visit Aldo and Rachel’s site for more information on how you can help at this very critical time. Our prayers are with Rachel and Aldo.

Hi everyone, this last week was extremely tough as Aldo’s mother passed away unexpectedly Wed Morning and under normal circumstances we would have gone to Italy to be with his daughter but because of the situation and my health we could not fly to Italy.

Aldo was very good about this and I understand how hard this has been for him. Thanks to all those who sent condolences.

We will fly to NY Wednesday and then I have surgical testing all day Thurs, a brain scan and blood work. The operation will be Monday the 22nd.

It is hard for me right now to know what to say, I know that I must stay positive and to believe that the outcome will be ok.

Please do not judge me for this moment of weakness, but in case of the worst scenario, I want you all to know that I could never have asked for a greater response and love that has been outpouring from the magic world. I will do everything in my power to be back and be able to do the magic that I love so much and to continue my life with a man that has given me so much joy.

David Blaine May Have Been Ribald at Some Point in Time

Image of David Blaine on Inside MagicWizbang Pop! reports this morning on a timeless story.

By timeless, we do not mean it will stand the test of time.

We mean, there is no date given for the unattributed claims about David Blaine and his romantic relationships with “many women.”

Do not get us wrong.  We like scandal and titillating innuendo as much as the next high-quality daily magic news source.  But there has to be steak to go with that sizzle.  We want fries with that shake.  We would at least like to know the adventure in love and its manifestations happened in this century.

Writes Wizbang Pop!, “The two had a kinky and wild sex life according to Blaine.”

There is a description of a favorite method of expressing one’s fondness allegedly preferred by Fiona Apple.  We do not know Ms. Apple and so do not feel comfortable exposing the method d’ amour David Blaine was said to have practiced.

Unless we know the person intimately — say a family member or work colleague — we refuse to contribute to the stream of gossip and sensationalism.  Now, if the story involved one of the Hardy clan, we would tell what we knew, what we thought we knew, what we wished we knew, and show pictures (even photoshopped versions for clarity) and streaming video featuring puppets and gaudy soundtrack.

That’s just the way we are.

If you must, you can read the details here:

Sad News: Magician Charles Reynolds Passes

The New York Times reported this weekend and Theater Mania reports this morning that magician, consultant, confidant and innovator Charles Reynolds passed away on November 4th from complications related to his battle with liver cancer.
Mr. Reynolds assisted with the magic in many Broadway shows.  In fact, he received a Drama Desk nomination for his special effects for the 1983 Broadway musical Merlin starring Doug Henning and Chita Rivera.
He assisted on the theater productions of  Big 1996, Into the Woods 1987, Sleight of Hand 1987, Doug Henning & His World of Magic 1984, The Stitch in Time 1981, closed in previews, and Blackstone! 1980.
The Times quotes Mr. Reynolds as describing his work as “providing ‘chaste, charming, weird, wonderful and supernatural illusions’ — and who proved it by coming up with two entirely different ways to make an elephant disappear.”
The Times also notes that Mr. Reynolds was Chief Magic Consultant to Doug Henning for all eight of his one-hour television specials. Mr. Henning proved he had a winning product when the first network show had more than 50,000 viewers.

Steve Dacri’s Fastest Hands Conquers Time-Space

Image of Sleight of Hand Magician Steve Dacri on Inside MagicLas Vegas Review Journal columnist extraordinaire Mike Weatherford gave a short shot out about Inside Magic Favorite Steve Dacri doing what seems to be impossible.

No, we don’t mean he performed his incredible Martian Sponge Ball routine.  Yes, the routine is easily the best and does seem impossible, but we mean something that challenges the traditional notions we share about time being linear.

Here’s the line that caught our eye:

“Magician Steve Dacri wrapped his “In Your Face” close-up magic at the Las Vegas Hilton on Monday.  He says he completed a 52-week contract in less than a year.”

That’s something, no?

We can give away the secret on this one, though.  Steve told The Review-Journal a second night was added to the weekly schedule during the run of his incredibly successful “In Your Face” close-up show at the Las Vegas Hilton recently.

Steve Dacri is a stud in this business.

Regis Philbin called him “The Fastest Hands in the World.”  He is not only fast, but sure.  There is a great clip on one of this promotional videos of him performing the aforementioned Martians routine for Merv Griffin and Tony Curtis.  Merv makes the comment that he is amazed even though he has his nose buried in Steve’s pinky ring.

Check out the full article in The Review-Journal here.

Congratulations to Steve Dacri on an incredible run.  We understand he’ll be taking about a month off to perform in Florida and then return to the Hilton to a new run with more than one show each week.

We’ll be taking the Inside Magic Semi out to Vegas around the first week of November and hope he’s landed by then.

He is fun to watch whether you’re a magician or a layperson.  And if you’re a magician, he makes you feel like you’re a layman.  And that’s a good thing.

The Spencers and the Widow’s Mite

Inside Magic Favorites and International Magicians of the Year, Kevin and Cindy Spencer bring their incredible and aptly named show Theatre of Illusions to Lander University's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium on October 19, 2010.

Why do we like the Spencers so effusively; other than they are great performers?

They care and care deeply; and not just about Magic, performing, or publicity. They care genuinely about people.

In fact, Kevin will bring his Healing of Magic curriculum to Lander's students the day before their big stage show. Through the program, healthcare professionals of all levels learn the therapeutic efficacy of Magic in the treatment of patients with cognitive or motor impairment.

This program has proven effective and The Spencers' have proven their commitment. They could have glommed onto any charitable cause, held shows, and contributed a portion from their profits or split ticket revenue. Chances are, they would receive accolades from within and without the Magic Community. News outlets would still cover them and they would feel some satisfaction in "giving back." Moreover, who are we to judge the motivations of any performer willing to do a good deed – even if doing the deed promotes ticket sales and bolsters the ego?

Assuming that time is really the currency of the traveling performer, the Spencers' willingness to give up a day to teach technicians, nurses, and doctors, is giving from their poverty. They have been giving through this program and in other ways around the world for years.

The web-based news provider for the Greenwood, South Carolina had one line that caught our eye. "The Spencers believe in magic on and off the stage. For these efforts, The Spencers were awarded the "Harry Chapin Award for Contributions to Humanity."

We thought about the line for almost an hour. We doubt anyone would take the time they take, give the commitment they offer, or steal precious hours from their crammed travel, practice and performance schedules in exchange for such a distinguished award.

We felt embarrassed and maybe properly shamed to wonder whether they felt their work was worthwhile; or if they ever considered a less labor-intensive way of doing good.

Like the widow in Luke 21, they are not giving to be seen but to help.

Check out The Spencers' very cool web site at www.SpencersMagic.com.

Ariann Black is Back and Reviewed

The Painfully Beautiful and Talented Ariann Black Performs in SecretsMike Weatherford is a straight-shooter — although we have no idea why one's sexual identity should matter, especially if you are using a gun or any firearm.

He stays up on the Magic scene in Las Vegas better than most.  He even knows the names of our illusions; which is disconcerting.  It kind of creeps us out when lay people know the jargon of our biz.

We much prefer audience members to talk about our "scarf trick" or "hanky trick" rather than "a really nice routine with a silk ball."

Of course, we take the audience as we find them and if they happen to know the jargon, we deal with it like a professional.  Still, we feel weird performing for closeted magicians who act like they don't know but they really do.  They take the force card because they think they are helping; and yes, while it is nice to pull off a Classic Force once in a while, we would much prefer to do it on our own.  We don't need charity — especially because most of our routine is based on screwing up the Classic Force.  We don't know what we would do if it worked.

Anyway, we digress.

Secrets was the topic and coincidentally, secrets is the theme of Ariann Black's new show in Las Vegas.

Let us be very straight shooting here as well: Ariann Black is beautiful.  She is the kind of beautiful that you don't want to look at because you become nervous, paranoid, and incontinent.  Maybe that's just us.  But she is not bad looking for a woman.

But we have never judged male magicians on their natural or enhanced beauty — except Darren Romeo and Lance Burton.  They are good looking guys, we suppose.

Mike Weatherford's take on the amazingly attractive Ariann Black's new show is luke-warm.  He appreciates her incredible skill set; ranging from close-up to big stage illusions.  But he wants more.

He riffs off one of Ariann Black's lines in the new show.  She reflects on her start in our art and recalls being told that "magic is for boys."

Very Sad News – J.C. Wagner Passes

J.C. Wagner at his Station at The Little ClubWe were startled to learn this evening (early morning) that the incomparable J.C. Wagner passed away Sunday evening after battling colon cancer for almost 10 months.

J.C. Wagner was the Bar Magician's Bar Magician.  He published several outstanding books and DVDs each with truly commercial magic.

You may have been following J.C. Wagner's condition on his web site.  News of his diagnosis, surgery, recovery, chemo treatments, and developments were posted on fairly regular intervals.

For a while, it seemed like there was hope against hope.  In the last week, though, we learned J.C. was moved into Hospice and his planned chemo treatment was put off.

J.C. was a regular at The Little Club on Coronado Island, California every Saturday.  He served up drinks and fantastic magic performed just inches from the astonished magician and lay patrons.

It is still a shock to us here at Inside Magic.  We will keep his family and loved ones in our prayers.

You can leave your comments and wishes in the Guest Book at J.C. Wagner's web site by going here.
