Housewife Escapes Boredom and Cuffs

Inside Magic Image of Donna Purnell as Alexandria the Great Escape ArtistCBS News reports on Donna Purnell a/k/a Alexanderia the Great whom they describe as “housewife by day, escape artist by night.”
The network relates the story of two ordinary folks who loved to escape from rope, handcuffs and chains as they courted in their youth.
Now, with their children out of the house, they avoid the empty nest syndrome by trying more complex, more daring escapes.
Donna Purnell trains with a strength coach and a “holding breath coach.”
In the unbearably cutesy narrative, the home of Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather and Edward R. Murrow relates how her family reacted to learn of her new vocation.

“[H]er kids like the idea of having an escape artist mom – in fact, they were relieved to find out that’s all she is.
“We would walk around the house and we’d see chains and handcuffs in places,” said her daughter.
Apparently, compared to that image – seeing your mom trapped in a tank of water is nothing.

Man oh man are we cynical here at Inside Magic. This is a story that did not need the following saccharine phrases:

“She felt like her hands were tied. And it motivated her to start thinking inside the box.”
“A few of her friends think she’s jumped off the deep end.”
“Donna and the kids hope that this act and the story behind it serve as inspiration to you – to escape whatever it is you’re stuck in.”
“It’s quite a predicament – especially considering, originally, all she wanted to escape – was boredom.”

Here is our twisted take on the reporting of this story. The author apparently believes these stunts are foolproof; that no one ever drowns whilst being tied, locked, and cuffed within 700 gallons of very cold water (Boston – Outside – Winter). Whether the artist is 49 or 14, this is a story about guts. Donna has our respect not simply because she risks her life performing escapes she learned later in life; but that’s a lot of it.
Dean Gunnarson told us once that there is no “automatic” escape and there is no “safe” escape when water is involved.

How Cool: Tudor Magic Newsletter Feb. 2011

Inside Magic Image of John Tudor's Poster

John Tudor is one of the all-time favorites of the Inside Magic Favorites.

This guy does magic — real magic.  We’re not speaking metaphorically or making a vague comparison for impact.

We mean it.

John Tudor has the apparent powers to do real magic.

John Tudor is an actor playing the part of a magician who is playing the part of an actor playing a magician.

He has, as we say on Broadway, skills.

We feel as if we have been transported back into the Golden Days of Magic when we watch him perform.

He brings a majesty to the stage while maintaining his friendly, charming persona.

Plus, he has always been nice to us and never hit us in a way that would cause unsightly bruising visible during our performance.

Houdini Resonates Within Us

Inside Magic Photograph of Houdini with his Mother and Wife

Houdini’s life in all of its fullness resonates deeply with us. His skills as a showman, magician, and escape artist surpass what we could dream of accomplishing in this lifetime.

His forbearance from alcohol, tobacco, and other vices impressed and guided us through the awkward teenage years when we were tempted to give up magic and good habits in exchange for entrance into the “cool group.”

As he aged, Houdini was always aware of the very temporary nature of it all. He fought to keep his name in the headlines, to master new aspects of our craft, to stay on top; all the while realizing it was ultimately a losing game.

His physical strength diminished but his experience and resourcefulness supplanted raw strength to accomplish miracles even more spectacular than before.

Despite his public persona of invulnerability, he proved to be as vulnerable as any man. The passing of his beloved mother brought unrelenting grief to this proto-superman. Death brought a permanent end to his doting, unrepentant acts of love for the woman he describes as an angel.

Reading biographies about this time in Houdini’s life evoked sympathy but in the last few weeks we again resonate with Houdini the vulnerable man. With the passing of our beloved mother, we gained empathy for Houdini. We felt his desperation and confusion and sadness.

In our youth, we perhaps judged Houdini too harshly. We wondered why time was unable to heal his wounded psyche. Why did the pain and grief seem so severe even years after her passing?

Terry Seabrooke Passes – Incredible Wit and Wonder

Inside Magic Image of Terry SeabrookeThe Waterford Observer (UK) is reporting that Inside Magic Favorite Terry Seabrooke, passed away this morning with his family at his side.

Terry Seabrooke was 78.

He enjoyed nearly half a century in the professional limelight, performing twice at The London Palladium, three times for The Queen at Buckingham Palace, and even to troops in the Falklands Islands after the 1982 war.

He continued performing until the final year of his life and was awarded one of the Magic Circle’s highest accolades in November 2009 for his services to British magic.

In receiving the highly coveted Maskelyne Award, named after renowned 19th Century magician and inventor John Nevil Maskelyne, he will forever be remembered alongside household names such as Paul Daniels, David Nixon and Ali Bongo.

Terry Seabrooke told reporters in his last interview:

“Magic has been very kind to me and has given me a great life. I have travelled the world and met some wonderful people along the way.

“When I started all those years ago I never thought I would go this far. It was really just a hobby that took off.

“I realised I was quite good at what I was doing and had the ability to make people laugh. Then all of a sudden people started throwing money at me to perform.

“I was working full-time in insurance sales but soon found I was earning more from the magic and decided to go full-time.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

We offer our condolences and prayers to his family and friends.  He will be missed greatly.

Dirk Arthur with Close-Up Illusion Show is a Hit!

Inside Magic Image of Dirk Arthur and His Big CatsWe do not always agree with Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist / critic Mike Weatherford but we do respect his knowledge of magic and magicians.

We assume he enjoys our craft and has acquired his eye for good magic and talented magicians from years of seeing less than stellar performers in and around Las Vegas.

We were particularly interested to read his review of Dirk Arthur’s new show at O’Sheas on the Strip.

Mr. Arthur had a five year deal at the Tropicana at the other end of Las Vegas Boulevard. Mr. Weatherford attributes his move to the significantly smaller venue to “uncertainties” at the sad hotel and casino that is today’s Tropicana.

Mr. Weatherford describes the new venue as befitting a stand-up comic and certainly not a full illusion show.

But against the odds, Mr. Arthur succeeds in his smaller venue; thanks in part to the intimacy it provides and a Bengal tiger.

“When the Bengal tiger rears up on its hind legs, taller than the magician, your heart thumps and you hope Arthur could keep his grip on that cable leash if the tiger decided to come check us out.”

The theater, the proximity of the audience to the illusions and the tiger combine to give “a new point of view to an act that had become all too familiar. Everyone has basically a front-row seat, and the illusions hold up to scrutiny. Think it’s done with mirrors? Go ahead and try to spot them.

Mr. Weatherford notes there is a workmanlike quality to the performance, or as he puts it, “a lack of grandeur.” The illusions are presented without glitz, glamour, choreography or engaging patter but it still works.

We are happy to read Mr. Weatherford’s reassessment of Mr. Arthur. Many of the Las Vegas print and media critics panned his past shows. “The biggest knock on him is that he can’t tell a joke and doesn’t bring much personality of his own to the table; that he lets the tigers and contraptions do the talking.”

Sad News: Bob Elliott Passes

Inside Magic Image of Happy and Bob ElliottWe received very sad news from Michael Johnson this evening.

Bob Elliott passed away this morning.  The last time I saw him was on Thanksgiving day, November 25.  He was in a hospital bed, under hospice care in his own home, and surrounded by family.  He was sleeping, but when he woke up, his eyes were clear and serene.  The last thing he said to me was “God Bless”.

For many decades, the Elliotts were at the heart of the New York magic scene.  They helped run Tannen’s Magic Camp.  They booked lecture tours, gave food and shelter to the rising stars of Magic, and never asked for a penny in return.  You see, they already had day jobs, Bob working as a Mining Engineer and Happy working as a Stock Broker.

Eventually they retired and moved to the West Coast.  Their children grew up and prospered. The Elliotts lived in a beautiful home on a hill, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.  When they relocated to Oceanside, California, they continued their sharing ways.

Visit Mr. Johnson’s website at www.magicianbobelliott.com to read about Bob and Happy’s life and career in Magic. The site features pages upon pages of fascinating information about this amazing magician who happened to be an unusually kind and good man.

Our prayers are with his family and thousands of friends and fans who likely never knew or could anticipate knowing a world without him.

Magician Aaron Radatz Opens New Family-Friendly Magic Show in Las Vegas

Inside Magic Image of Aaron Radatz Poster for New Show in Las VegasWe love Vegas.  We love the sights, sounds, smells and crowds.  However, we are over the age of majority and therefore have access to all that Vegas offers.

Of course, having “access” to a club or location is not the same thing as “being  permitted entry.”  As the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals  opined in our recent case, Tim Quinlan d/b/a Inside Magic v. Club Zing, 231 F.3d 1014, 1016 (10th Cir. 2010), “Petitioner (that’s us!)  is reminded that just because this night club cannot deny access on the basis of age, sex, race, or creed; it is well within their discretion to exclude Petitioner and his type.”

Elsewhere in the opinion, “his type” was defined as:

stuporous by breeding or choice, dressed in a manner evidencing the lack of mirrors in his home, excessively needy and seeking constantly the affirmation of the front-door staff (‘Do you think I am pretty?’), and apparently impecunious to the point of paying for apparently unnecessary additional drinks with “Inside Magic Bucks” or postage stamps.”

We digress.  Our point was only there is a dearth of things to do with kids in Las Vegas.  Once touted as a Family-Friendly City, it quickly returned to its wild natural state fit for a family, the Manson Family.

Aaron Radatz has what we call in the business, skills.  He is more than a nice guy with abounding energy and ideas, he has the ability to perform effects that seem virtually identical to real magic.  That is not just our opinion – Time Magazine called Aaron Radatz “the magical entertainer to see” and Mystic Hollow’s home team, the Detroit Tigers, raved, “You will have to see it to believe it.”

He has toured nearly all of the states in our union (45 out of 50), and brought the closest thing to real magic to 37 countries on six of the earth’s seven continents.

According to the local Vegas news outlets, he began is run at the Clarion Hotel, just east of Las Vegas Boulevard.  This is the perfect location for families who want to take a break from the Strip to see a great performer and some outstanding illusions.

Magic Babe Ning: The Inside Magic Celebrity Interview

Inside Magic Image of Magic Babe Ning in the Impalement CageMagic Seen – Europe’s largest magic magazine – called her “The sexiest woman in magic.” In October 2009, she was FHM Singapore Cover Girl, ‘Magic Babe’ Ning is Asia’s new star in magic!’

In 2009. Magic Babe Ning received the coveted Merlin Award for “Most Original Female Illusionist of the Year” from the International Magicians Society.

She somehow finds the time to serve as an ambassador for the Power Over Cervical Cancer campaign and Coke Zero’s “Wild at Heart, Fit in Body” campaign.

Inside Magic named her “The Smoldering Siren of Illusion.”

Ning is in great demand and so it we are appreciative of her willingness to undergo the Celebrity Magic Interview.

How did you become interested in Magic?

When I was 5, my kindergarten had a funny Chinese-speaking magician perform for us during Children’s’ Day. My friends and I were amazed at the things he could do – sure, he used comical looking stage props but it was the funniest moment we’d ever experience our entire lifetimes.

Later, when I first saw Copperfield on TV, he simply exuded steady sexiness and an air of deep sophistication with his illusions. He was the first illusionist I saw on TV and I was so smitten with the man, I even had his sexy GOT MILK? poster proudly stuck on my bedroom wall, instead of teenage boy bands like my other girl friends.

(I suppose it’s reasonable to hold DC responsible for my innate attraction towards older men 😉 )

DC inspired me to take up magic as a hobby.

So instead of playing with Barbie dolls, I picked up magic books at the local library and learnt easy magic effects that I could follow in the instructional pictures provided. The plush toys and stuffed animals on my bed would be my unblinking audience.

My first few tricks utilized crushed paper balls, Styrofoam cups, rubber bands and other typical items you could easily find around the house. But my family was nevertheless impressed by the precocious child that I was… am… and they’d always encourage me to perform to visiting relatives or friends, so they were mighty supportive about my love for magic – though it’s supposed to be only something boys did.

Then again, being the only girl in the extended family clan, I only had boys to play with so I’d be roughing it out with my cousins, playing soccer or wrestling. I was a real tomboy!

Though I was very young, I still felt the glee knowing magic secrets that could amaze and entertain others. I stuck to the Magician’s Code and with love and support from folks around me (the elders all found me strange – but in an endearingly geeky sort of way), I continued my journey simply because magic found me.

What does your family think of your career, success, and considerable publicity as Magic Babe?

Nope, I’m the “black sheep” of the family. It may have been easier perhaps if I had a mentor that way, but everyone else chose to be brainy engineers, medical professionals, busy bankers, successful business owners and there was absolutely no one in show business. My family is a respectable one and still rather traditional.

Everyone expected me to be some sort of corporate raider, since I spent my entire primary and secondary school education in a very strict all-girls Christian school (imagine – 10 years of sheer deprivation!), one of the very best academic institutions in the country.

In fact, it’s a known fact that most graduates of the school (Methodist Girls’ School) grew up to become politicians’ wives, just like Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew (the late wife of Singapore’s highly respected Minster Mentor) or high-profile lawyers or limelight-hogging socialites.

Hmmm… So that pretty much makes me the black sheep of the school too! Hahahaha.

From Whit to Magic Babe Ning

Inside Magic Image of Magic Babe NingYesterday, Thanksgiving here in the U.S., we republished our first Inside Magic Celebrity Interview . Whit Haydn was the first of the Inside Magic Favorites and a great start to our on-line journal back in 2003.

Whit Haydn is one of the busiest in our craft and so we were honored that he would take time to help launch Inside Magic.

We have had some great interviews over the last seven years. We doubt professionals in other crafts are so willing to give access to the lesser media outlets; but magicians have almost uniformly been available for interviews, stories, gossip, and denial of gossip.

Coming up on Monday, November 30, we are honored to publish our latest Inside Magic Celebrity Interview with one of the hottest magicians working today.

Magic Babe Ning and J.C.Sum have been featured here and in more reputable journals around the world for their constant push to outdo their previous stunts. We asked Ning if she would consider being the subject of our Inside Magic Celebrity Interview and surprisingly, she said yes. We learned later that she was very sick and no doubt acceded to our plea in feverous delirium.

It is a classy person who sticks by her promises; even if the promises were made under duress. Ning is the definition of classy.

We were surprised by her willingness to answer even our more intrusive questions with enthusiastic sense of candor. We learned about her special connection with magician David Copperfield, her feelings about being a sex symbol, her willingness to try even the most dangerous stunts, and her relationship with J.C. Sum.

Look for the full interview on Monday. This is one you don’t want to miss. In fact, we think we’ll make a point of reading it as well. Plus we like the pictures she sent along – ok, so we are human, sue us.
