Mac King Wows ‘Em at London’s Palladium

Inside Magic Image of Palladium Magic 100 Year CelebrationThe Las Vegas Sun reports that Inside Magic favorite and all around good guy and great magician Mac King took part in the prestigious Palladium Magic Show in London, England.

The show celebrated a century of Magic at the prestigious theater (“theatre” in metric).

Mac King told the paper of record for the town that keeps no records and admits nothing,  “I was mighty excited to be a part of the one-night event 100 Years of Magic at The Palladium. Playing the London Palladium is every performer’s dream. It was a great show and a wonderful audience.”

You (or someone you have who does such things for you) can see the poster and program for what must have been an incredible event here.

Criss Angel: Magic Broadcasting Network Ready for Launch

Inside Magic Image of Countdown Screen Currently in Place at Criss Angel's TheMagicPlace.comMagician Criss Angel’s Magic Broadcasting Network (“MBN”) is on the pad, into its final countdown and making final safety checks before its launch into the interweb net.

In keeping with the astronaut theme, we note Angel’s launch party will come with major star-power.

The site takes flight at Monday evening at 9:00 p.m. (midnight EDT) when Robin Leach introduces Angel; who in turn welcomes Siegfried Fischbacher, Lance Burton, Jeff McBride, David Hasselhoff and Flavor Flav.

We understand the television studio is located right on the strip and is fully “tricked out” with the latest 3D animation, video technology, and soundstages for the 14 shows on the initial schedule.

(See what we did there?  “Tricked out” and Criss Angel is a magician who is launching a magic-oriented television and web portal? Our wit is so sharp we can shave just by bumping up against it in the morning).

Robin Leach will be tweeting and reporting from the fete Tuesday.  Check out his preview and schedule here: Criss Angel readies launch of his online Magic Broadcasting Network – Las Vegas Sun.

Magician Jan Rouven Takes Place in ‘Justice League’

Inside Magic Image of Magician Jan Rouven and His Lovely Assistant Johanna GrajalesLas Vegas Review-Journal columnist Mike Weatherford suggests only the the discriminating magic show consumer can decide whether the town really needs a half-dozen big-box illusion shows.  He asks, “So many magicians, but who has the real magic?”

Magician Jan Rouven is the sixth “big-box” illusionist on the town this summer.  Steve Wyrick boosted the big-boxers total to an even seven with his new Ultra Magician show at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Mr. Weatherford points out that there may be six or seven shows but there is some overlap.  “Each show pretends to ignore the others, which is one reason you see a lot of the material duplicated. Another is that none of the contenders has been humble enough to propose some type of Justice League of magic team-up; they all hope the others will go away.”

The review is good for the new name on the scene.

“He’s a young, likable German with charisma and only minimally goofy stage attire (sparkly yes, but no epaulets or animal prints),” says Mr. Weatherford.

Rouven presents one of the oldest of the “big-box” effects, Metamorphosis with a dangerous update.  The magician and beautiful, but stealthy assistant Johanna Grajales perform the classic in “lighting fast” fashion.  The speedy exchange is even more incredible considering Rouven begins the transposition securely locked in tank of water.

“It’s refreshing,” Mr. Weatherford observes, “to have an illusionist young and physically spry enough to play the danger card convincingly, not just jamming younger assistants into boxes.”

Connecticut Teen Magician Zach Ivins Selected for Magic Live!

Inside Magic Image of Magician Zach Ivins from his web site zachivins.comConnecticut teen magician Zach Ivins, celebrates his selection as an intern at MAGIC Live! in Las Vegas.

His hometown paper has a great feature on young Zach; touting his new role as an intern for the always incredible conclave of great magic in our favorite major city in Clark County, Nevada.

We understand the 18-year-old magician will work side-by-side and learn from the big names in our business.  “Joanie Spina will critique his act and Richard Flaverty will provide a photo session.

He will learn by helping at the conference, assisting during lectures and workshops as well as helping backstage during evening shows.

Comfort Food, Magician Mac King and Candy

Inside Magic Image of Candy an Orphan of the Streets from Las VegasDo not miss the hardest working Magician in Vegas, Mac King says
Vinnie Favorito in today’s Las Vegas Sun.

We don’t know Mr. Favorito personally but understand he is a
Las Vegas comedian of substantial renown and a friend of Inside
Magic Favorite Mac King. In addition, as we said just this
morning when discussing a different topic, “any friend of Mac is
a friend of ours.”

We were dining that one of the many magic-themed breakfast
nooks in and about the Greater Area of Mystic Hollow, Michigan.
We forget how the topic came up – but not because we are
fabricating this story out of floss and flotsam. We were
discussing “comfort food” and comparing the merits Kraft’s
American Classic vis-à-vis the many private label brands
of Macaroni and Cheese and coming to agreement amongst all
gathered around the counter that Kraft must have a secret recipe
for delicious Mac and Cheese.

The waitress, Flobee (short for Florence Beatty, hence “Flo
B”) began extolling the substantial comfort one can gain from
carney food like Elephant Ears, Funnel Cakes, and Turkey
Drumsticks. One of the younger magicians made an inappropriate
comment about Corn Dogs providing comfort and the meeting was
adjourned without further discussion.

But it is unlike us to deviate from our topic. Usually we are
like a laser guided missile of messaging reflecting off the
stunned eyes of our readers. So let’s get back to it, shall we.
Sure.

Mac King Celebrates Young Authors

Inside Magic Image of Mac KingFollowing on the February 2011 launch of Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour, the man himself visited with student/guests at the Annual Elaine Wynn 3rd Grade Book Publishing Party. Inside Magic Favorite Mac King has participated in the event for the last three years and has been a fervent proponent of literacy and providing children the opportunity to read more.

Mac King joined the “Wynning Authors” at Elaine Wynn Elementary School’s Third Grade Book Publishing Party. The fete honors young authors and encourages reading. The event showcases the students’ accomplishments as published authors and gives them a chance to read a passage from their books during the ceremony.

The magician recently named The Best Strip Headliner by Las Vegas Weekly, told the gathered kids that his interest in magic developed by “checking-out” a magic text from his elementary school library.

He now dedicates an enormous percentage of his available time visiting local Las Vegas schools to encourage kids to become readers and writers.

If you have a trip planned to Las Vegas, be sure to block out time to take in The Mac King Comedy Magic Show. He appears twice daily, Tuesday through Saturday, at Harrah’s Las Vegas at 1 and 3 p.m. in the Showroom Theatre.

Chinese Magician Liu Chien and Number 8

Inside Magic Image of Liu Chien and Report on His US American Debut at the Wynn Casino in Las VegasWe wrote of Liu Chien’s upcoming debut at the fabulous Wynn Las Vegas Resort and Casino and the date is nigh.  Liu Chien Magic Show 2011 – Witness Of Miracles” to the Encore Theater on April 30 and May 1 at 7:30 p.m.

We did some reading and found some enticing tidbits about the premiere of this talented young man.

Liu Chien’s performance will be in Chinese without translation but promoters do not believe this will detract from the magic, humor, “exciting audience interactions,” and breath-taking illusions.

Amazing and breath-taking requires no translation.  but we wonder about the “exciting audience interactions” and the close-up portion of the show.

Humorous and unexpected, Liu Chien’s show lets the audience experience the mystery of magic up close, and has earned him a place among the most influential magicians in Asia. The show will be performed in Chinese.

Tickets for this highly anticipated performance sell for $68, $108 and $188.  We thought the pricing was interesting: all of the prices contain at least one number eight.  Perhaps it was a coincidence due to the local tax rates on theater performances within Clark County, Nevada.

We checked with the folks selling the tickets and were told the prices included all service charges and taxes.  We should have asked if the number eight has special meaning in the Chinese culture while we had the representative on the phone.

Magician Liu Chien in Vegas for Two Shows

Inside Magic Image of Liu Chien and Report on His US American Debut at the Wynn Casino in Las VegasWe feel like we know Liu Chien from our magic marathon sessions watching our fellow artists on YouTube. He probably does not know us, though. It is funny how you feel you know someone because you see them on television or YouTube but when you finally meet them, they stare blankly at you without a hint of recognition. As we wrote in that essay we had to hand into the judge, “we must remember, seeing them is not the same thing as them seeing you.”

There are days when we will actually stop playing Trisk™ to open our laptop and watch YouTube magicians.  Some are good, most are not.  Liu Chien is one of the very good ones.

As we have admitted on these pages before and have thusly testified before certain international tribunals that the United States may or may not recognize as having jurisdiction over its putative citizens, we do not speak Chinese.

It is not that we speak it sort of good but our syntax is not the best.  We know about three things in Chinese and one of them is actually Vietnamese but is apparently a comment that is accepted with the same meaning in China, Japan and South Korea.  And even then, we can say it (but we wouldn’t if there there is a chance that anyone from the Asian Rim is within earshot) but we have no idea how to write it.

Trisk™, by the way, is a favorite winter game here in Mystic Hollow.  It is essentially Risk® but instead of conquering armies taking over the world in long drawn-out fashion and endless turn-taking; you have a small cadre of well-connected magicians who have access to armies they can summon to do their conquering if necessary.  Some have suggested it is the strategy game Risk® but with fewer pieces and twenty or so pewter top hats taken from Monopoly® sets.

They’re probably right.  While we don’t know the game’s origins, it has been an essential part of our lives since we were Little Shavers.

Thanks to do-gooders and socially aware voting blocks, Mystic Hollow no longer permits children under the age of seven to shave with a straight-razor or any disposable shaving system.  As a consequence, the next generation of young magicians growing up in this hamlet of magic will not learn Trisk™ or Risk®.  Their parents won’t have a need to distract their curious attention and less coordinated hands away from sharp blades and mature smelling shaving cream.

Some blame our close proximity to the Straight-Razor Capital of the World, New Finito, Michigan.  Kids start out as unofficial “Little Shavers” even before they attend pre-school and get their first box of second blades.  Most of the blades are dull — quality control at the factory usually culls the bad blades before they get to the sharpening section — but kids can still find a way to carelessly handle the products and someone always ends up getting hurt.

There are few in Mystic Hollow without a good scar or two on their hands, upper thighs, or cheeks (of their face).  Your first scar is a rite of passage; and if not properly handled can require Last Rites.  “What does not kill us makes us less attractive,” is the unofficial motto.

We suppose this quirk is similar to other towns adjacent to some factory or service center.  The young magicians of Deerfield, Illinois take tremendous pride in their first episode of hypoglycemic shock fostered by the cubic yards of Sara Lee Bakery Seconds and Rejects.

Lance Burton VIP at Oscar Party – Writing Script

Inside Magic Image of Lance Burton, Master MagicianForget Alexander!  Robin Leach is the man who knows.

Mr. Leach reports on the Las Vegas version of the Hollywood Oscar Show.  127 Hours star Rebecca C. Olson served as the female equivalent of a Master of Ceremonies.   “Mistress of Ceremonies” sounds obtuse or maybe inappropriate but we don’t know why.

Her date for the evening was Lance Burton, Master Magician.

For an unemployed magician, he was looking pretty good.

Lance Burton was more than serving as eye candy for a Hollywood Starlet.  He announced his move from the very legitimate theatre to the silver screen.

“Lance told me that his entertainment partner, juggler Michael Goudeau, and he are now one-third of the way through shooting their indie magic film. ‘We have a 100-page script, and we’ve completed about 30 pages so far,’ Lance said. ‘We’re really pleased with the way it’s coming along, and I’m having great fun taking on an acting role.'”

Steve Dacri Passes

Inside Magic Image of Steve Dacri - From Las Vegas Review-Journal

Norm Clarke has a very nice piece about the great Steve Dacri in today’s Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Steve Dacri was a friend of Inside Magic and always quick to respond to our often bothersome emails about what was happening in Vegas.

From Norm Clarke’s column:

His quick wit helped him reach the big stage during his career. There were late-night show appearances with Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett and Mike Douglas. After almost four decades at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, Las Vegas became his home in 2003 with his wife, Jan.

Steve Dacri was always encouraging and positive.  He had every right to be condescending or haughty but those traits did not seem to be in his nature.  He was kind.  He was nice.  It is a shame those two words sound so trite — perhaps because they are used so carelessly.

We will miss Steve.  Magic is less without him and his smile.
