IBM 83rd Convention Kicks Off

Inside Magic Image of IBM Convention LogoThe headline to this post took about seven hours to work, market-test, evaluate, re-focus, right-size and streamline.  Assuming, arguendo, we are paid $700.00 per hour for our legal work, the article has cost close to $5,600.00 already.  (Yes, we know seven hours times $700.00 per hour is $4,900.00 but we tend to round up in our billing so we can afford to attend fine conventions and kill nearly eight hours (practically eight hours) writing just the headline).

And that really is the point of this post and the convention.  Lots of preparation to make things look incredibly normal.  Sitting here in the little alcove off the wonderfully appointed main lobby at the Dallas Sheraton, we have a prime seat (or so we have been told by sailors the world ’round) for the comings and goings of our magic brethren and cistern as they prepare to perform mysterious things in a manner so well-rehearsed that it looks normal, ordinary.

In a few hours, these common looking folk with be adorned in fine clothes packed with loads of animal, vegetable and silk that would be sufficient to inhibit the range of movement of even a ballet star and yet move smoothly through routines so well-rehearsed that they look spontaneous and fresh.

We think it was Harry Houdini who once observed that “99 percent of magic is normal but the trick is to make it look 100 percent.”

This has been a trying year for the economy, for families, for the world.  The acts planned and readied for this week will not be witnessed by even a slim fraction of the world and yet the positive energy released after years of rehearsal and refinement will have a demonstrable, real effect.  Not merely a psychic or ethereal augmentation of the human spirit that cannot be measured by “non-believers” but a concrete uplifting of attendees spirit, aspirations, and intentions.

The bonds formed and re-affirmed here may or may not hold longer than the convention’s duration,  but the experience will surely lower the guard of participants; allowing them to be more aware and open to forming such friendships in the future.  Young people will learn, more experienced will teach, and the dynamic shift that effortlessly propels our art through history intensifies.

This is a special place at a special time.

With Whom Would You Dine: Condi, Blaine, Dr. Weill or Glenn Beck?

Inside Magic Image of Condi Rice David Blaine will be in Naples on March 1, 2012 as part of town’s speaker series held at the beautiful and, by definition, ritzy Ritz-Carlton.

His talk is scheduled to follow the February 1st talk to be given by Dr. Andrew Weill.  Dr. Weill is known to those who would know of such people as “a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, a healing oriented approach to health care which encompasses body, mind, and spirit.”

This puts David Blaine in rare company.  The series kicks off with Glenn Beck on January 7, 2012.  Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is the final speaker on March 20.

Without regard to politics, it does make for an interesting cast, n’est-ce pas?

Interested in checking out the series?  You’ll need $700.00 for a ticket.  That gets you in to all four talks.  Hungry and lonely?  Well, for a mere $1,500, you can get a ducat to the dinner series, which includes a private cocktail reception, dinner and 45 minute question and answer session with the speakers.  Wanting a little more, how should we phrase it, intimacy with Glenn, Doc, David and Condi?  You can become a Town Hall Benefactor.  Upon receipt of your cash or check for $5,250.00, you will receive “exclusive access for two with priority seating, a private cocktail reception, dinner and 45-minute question and answer period, plus entry to special events and an invitation to dine with one guest speaker.”

Who would you choose for your one-on-one din-din?

Sidney Radner Passes – Keeper of Houdini Legend

Inside Magic Image of Sidney Radner and Curator Elizabeth C. Dobrska The New York Times broke the sad news of Sidney Radner’s passing today.  He was 91.

We considered a few people pillars of our Magic Reality.  Sidney Radner, Martin Gardner, Harry Blackstone, Jr., and David Copperfield.  We could not imagine magic without these four fixtures in our worldview of this wonderful art.

Mr. Radner  thoroughly in loved Magic and literally held the key to some of the finest pieces of history from Magic’s Golden Age.

According to his son, William, cancer was the cause of Mr. Radner’s death.

The Times correctly observed Mr. Radner’s unique position in the preservation of magic history.

Mr. Radner is credited in the world of magicians and magic collectors with having preserved some of the most important of Houdini’s props, including the “Chinese Water Torture Cell” (a water tank in which Houdini was lowered upside down, his feet chained) and the oversize “Milk Can” he used in a similar escape stunt.

His collection also included lesser items, but for Houdini buffs equally treasured, like the lock picks Houdini hid from his audiences by swallowing them, then regurgitating them, for escapes; cylinder pulleys, key wrenches, latches, levers and tumblers he used in various tricks; and a set of charred handcuffs from the exhibit that was set up in the theater lobby for his shows, advertised by Houdini as “handcuffs used in Spain on prisoners burning to death in 1600!”

Mr. Radner’s great fortune began when he attended a convention in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1935.  It was there that he met Theo Weiss a/k/a Hardeen; Houdini’s kid brother and an fine escape artist in his own right.

Magician Banned: Tweeting ‘Wand’ Pic

Image of Two WandsInept magician Tony Spain’s attempt to “cash in” on the Anthony Weiner scandal backfired.

Tony Spain is by all accounts one of the worst people in magic. He proved deserving of the title last week attempting to make commercial hay out of the Anthony Wiener scandal by “sending a Twitter of his wand.”

Mr. Spain sent a grainy image of a beat-up magic wand as an attachment to his unsolicited direct messages to hundreds important debutantes in 23 different locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Many of the young ladies — having been chastened by the news surrounding Anthony Weiner’s scandal — refused to open the image attachment. As a result, Twitter determined Tony Spain’s messages were “uninvited, obscene material” and violated the Twitter terms of service. The folks at Twitter closed Tony Spain’s account without opening the attached image. Tony yelped and pleaded but Twitter refused to entertain the insolent magi’s petitions.

Tony Spain, being Tony Spain, started an impotent public attack on Twitter. He claimed the nascent Internet social media company was infringing on his “Fifth Amendment rights.”

Disregard for a second that the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution has nothing to do with free speech or speech conducted via social media, by making this allegation Mr. Spain’s shared ample proof of his ignorance worldwide.

We assume Mr. Spain wanted to argue that he had certain First Amendment rights guaranteeing him the “Right to Free Speech.” As noted above, this right only protects against actions by the government.  (With the passage of the 14th Amendment, the Bill of Rights apply to protect against the actions of state and local governments). As readers of Inside Magic know, the Fifth Amendment protects against being forced to incriminate oneself.

We have received perhaps hundreds of copies of Mr. Spain’s Twitter messages from the original recipients and others. The text of the message accompanying the image attachment reads, “Here is a picture of my wand. Look at it. Isn’t it magnificent? It is so magical.”

What Tony Spain hoped to accomplish is unclear. But that is how Tony Spain rolls. Who would open the attachment to a message like this?

Creative Magic to Close

Inside Magic Image of Our Staff Reading the News of Creative Magic ClosingLike most magicians, we were intrigued by the tease and hints Creative Magic floated in the last couple of weeks.

The promised a big announcement on the 24th of June and even had a countdown clock to add to the excitement.

There should be a law against having such a build-up for such sad news.

Just after the stroke of midnight, we received word from Brian and Rebekah that as of this moment, Creative Magic was ceasing production of all items.  They announced the company is closing and that the inventory will be liquidated.

We are a trusting sort here at Inside Magic.  If you tell us you have a surprise for us but you cannot tell us for a week or two, we assume it will be a good surprise.  If you tease us with hints and cryptic clues on Facebook, we are even more sure the surprise will be something in which we will find delight, not that we will become depressed upon its revelation.

Jay Sankey’s Big A** Boxes of Magic Tonight Live 9:00pm

Inside Magic Image of Mom and Son Enjoying Latest Installment of GAF View-Master Magic Disk of the Month Club!As regular or irregular readers of Inside Magic know, we never tout tricks or sites unless there is something in it for us or we think there could be something for us if we kiss-up well enough.

We have few friends but the ones we have are suckers for sucking up.

That is why this article has some gravitas.  We get nothing out of this post; not one thing.  Jay Sankey is a great magician and he has been kind to Inside Magic over the last 45 years but he did not ask us to promote his “Big A** Party’ scheduled for this evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.  We don’t know what time that would be in metric so you will have to do your own extrapolation if necessary.

Apparently there will be things to win and a chance to question Mr. Sankey live via YouTube.com.  He has his very own YouTube Channel, “Bending the Real.”

We have our own GAF View-Master Disk of the Month Club that is also exciting and will feature 3-D images of Las Vegas Headliners Charro and Dan Rowan (of Rowan and Martin – Laugh-In fame) performing a levitation.

The comedy ensues when it is the staid and mustachioed Dan Rowan who levitates whilst Charro stares upward in disbelief.  This was part of a three GAF Viewmaster set and originally sold for $10.00 (plus tax).  Through an exclusive deal with the publisher (the last of the great GAF View-Master Disk producers, Vanderman and Sons, Inc. of Sioux City, Iowa, we can give the disks away to our members without any additional cost over and above the monthly subscription rate of $19.99 (USD) (Please, no stamps).

We felt obligated to add our own plug because there was no payback for us otherwise.

Magician Held for Fork Bending

Inside Magic Image of Magician in Police Custody for Bending ForksMidlands (UK) magician Paul Saint (stage name of Paul Fisher) was “turfed out” of a bar for bending forks. Worse than that indignity, he was placed into quasi-custody by the local police and held until a background check could be completed.

Only after determining Mr. Saint was “clean” was he permitted to step out of a police van and enjoy what was left of an evening with friends.

His story started like most silverware bending leading to police custody tales go. Mr. Saint joined a group of pals at the now-infamous Après bar in Lichfield. He performed what must have been a very convincing fork bending routine and was “given his marching orders by a burly doorman.”

Most readers of Inside Magic have been tossed out of a bar for performing magic tricks but usually because closing time had come and gone. The door is closed behind you and you move on in search of different venues with ample impromptu audiences to be had.

Mr. Saint has been performing for more than ten years and he was no doubt familiar with the well-established routine. That was when it all got weird.

Mr. Saint told a reporter for The Sunday Mercury, “The police vehicle came screaming up the street and an officer jumped out.

“He said he’d had a complaint about me bending up some forks. I told him they were my own forks and was about to get some out of my pocket when he told me to get in the van.”

We have attempted to retrieve a recording of the UK-equivalent of the 911 call leading to this confrontation. How does one complain about someone “bending up some forks” in a way that would send a police van “screaming up the street?” Perhaps because the UK does not permit handguns, they consider all potential weapons with equal ferocity.

In fact, here is a transcript of a call we just made to the Mystic Hollow, Michigan 911 service. Compare it with the reaction of the Midlands’ police.

David Blaine Promises “All Magic” in Next Special

It has been four years in the making but Magician David Blaine promises his next “big event” will be well worth the wait.

News outlets are all abuzz this morning with variations on David Blaine’s announcement last Friday.  Why the delay?  We’re not sure but it  may have to do with the outlet chosen to deliver the news.

David Blaine shared his plans with fans on TinyChat.com during an on-line session.  What is TinyChat.com? From their website:

Tinychat provides dead simple, free to use, video chat rooms that just work! Enjoy chatting with your friends or making new ones, just create a chat room or join one.

It is easy to use and free.  It is not easy to search, however.  It took us a while to locate the David Blaine chat session.  His page is located at tinychat.com/DAVIDBLAINE.  We should have tried that combination of words and backslashes as we tried to guess the url.

Magicians have criticized David Blaine for his “magic-less magic shows” in the past. He told TinyChat viewers the May 2012 event (or events?)  will feature magic tricks rather than endurance stunts. “This is as good as it gets… All magic, nothing else,” he said.  “It’s better than anything that’s ever been done, by me at least… It’s the most original concept I’ve ever come up with. It’s taken me four years to sort out.”

Depending on the news source, the effect will either be seen live on ABC in the United States; or from video tape on NBC television.  It sounds like there are a few details to clarify yet.
