Up-Close with David Copperfield

It is impossible to not read further after Lisa Bettany’s introduction:

I really wished I hadn’t sat in the front row at David Copperfield’s “An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion” at the Vancouver Centre for Performing Arts.

Hard to believe anyone would balk at choice seats to David Copperfield’s show.  Perhaps, some would be concerned they would become a magician-bait; the likely choice for “volunteer” or “assistant” status.

But Lisa Bettany’s reluctance came from her desire to remain in a state of disbelief.

Lisa notes that her perspective on the show would have been decidedly different just a few rows back.

She is certain a seat just a bit further from the stage would have kept her from seeing “the wires that controlled the singing and dancing tie, or the slightly concave bottom of the magical ‘shrinking table,’ or the girl that appeared and disappeared in the ‘reserved’ seat next to me wearing three different outfits, or Copperfield’s caked-on makeup and spray-on hair.”

Ouch. That was a low blow.

Despite the “low blow,” Lisa is a fan.

There were great moments, too. He is an incredibly skilful showman, and irritatingly charismatic, even when he made a poor girl shove her hand down his pants to make sure there was nothing in his pocket — not once, but twice. Charming.

Her vantage point did not expose all of the magic, however.  Lisa tells readers of The Province (CA) most of the illusions remain a mystery.

Penn & Teller’s Non-Controversy

Inside Magic Image of Magician and Author Penn JilletteThe article’s opening line is clever but belied by the real story.  “Copperfield is no Penn pal,” says The New York Post‘s Gossip Column.

We are guessing it has something to do with Penn & Teller’s upcoming NBC Special.  Got to stir the stink — especially during Sweeps Month.

The columnists don’t let up, though.  “David Copperfield and Penn Jillette’s greatest illusion may be their supposed friendship.”

The faux controversy surrounds to Penn Jillette’s reaction to Mr. Copperfield’s plans to impregnate a girl on stage.  Mr. Copperfield added, “Naturally, it will be without sex.”

Mr. Jillette snapped back “The only way Copperfield can reproduce is with a cheesy magic act.”

Okey Dokey.

Before we go on we should note this controversy was less than a tempest in a teapot.  There was only one paper covering it.  Sure, the story was re-printed in The Las Vegas Review-Journal, but that’s about it.

God-Man Sues Copperfield for Theft of Powers

Inside Magic Image of Woman with Clear EyesThis is not Inside Magic fiction. According to the Warner Brothers Celebrity Justice website, Minnesota “god” Christopher Roller has sued David Copperfield for $50,000,000.

The basis of the suit? Mr. Roller claims Mr. Copperfield has stolen or improperly used Mr. Roller’s “godly powers without permission to perform magic on stage.”

We checked out the story and aren’t convinced. While the media outlets, including Celebrity Justice, have not been able to produce a copy of the summons and complaint, Inside Magic was able to secure a copy of both documents. Mr. Roller is acting as his own attorney in this litigation and contrary to the news reports, is not suing Mr. Copperfield for theft of “godly powers” but as a labor dispute.

Chances are, this lawsuit will be thrown out on a motion to dismiss. It is significant that there is no record of Mr. Copperfield or his attorneys receiving service of the complaint.
Not to give this strange person additional hits to his weird website, but you can check out what he thinks about himself, his position in the universe and on our planet as god, and read the other celebrities with whom he claims some special relationship. Mr. Roller apparently told reporters that if Mr. Copperfield can show how he performs his magic by means other than the borrowed god powers, he will retract the lawsuit.
