The Vindicator of Youngstown (OH) appropriately devotes considerable space to The Youngstown Magic Club this morning. And when you’re talking magic in Youngstown, Ohio, you are necessarily talking about Tom Craven and his incredible contributions to the art.
The positive article focused on the club’s very successful Annual Close-Up Show at the Holiday Inn, MetroPlex this weekend. Young Allison Turnbull of North Lima was apparently the volunteer of the day for “nearly every magician” in the show. She told the reporter, “It was fun to be in the tricks. The magicians were all pretty good. I was able to figure out a couple of the tricks.” Ms. Turnbull hopes to learn magic and was certainly encouraged by what she saw.
But when we think Youngstown, Ohio, we think of Tom Craven and Del Ray. The article does not disappoint. Mr. Craven is front and center, profiled for his contributions to our Art in Youngstown and around the world. The reporter notes, “[s]easoned magician Tom Craven, 70, of Kent, travels the nation to teach the craft to other magic groups and said it’s OK to share secrets ‘among the group.'”
The gifted author, performer, and lecturer has been a member of the Youngstown Magic Club since 1962.
“We’re a family down here,” Craven said. “Magic is the main thrust. It’s what brought us together and keeps us together. These are my real friends.”
Despite Mr. Craven’s considerable tenure, his membership in the club is a mere fraction of its history. The paper notes, “the Youngstown group is one of the world’s oldest magic clubs, having formed in 1917 or 1918. In 1922, it became the second ‘ring’ of the International Brotherhood of Magic.”
Nick Verina, Club Secretary, shared the club’s proud history as the home for many “many famous entertainers and illusionists, including the recently deceased renowned magician Del Ray.” The profile encourages interested readers to contact Mr. Verina and plan on attending the upcoming Dan Garrett lecture set for April 21st at 7:30 pm.
Check out the club’s home page for more information on Mr. Garrett’s lecture and other activities.
Congratulations to Mr. Craven, Mr. Verina, and the members of Ring No. 2.

Hi, I am Robert Ward. In the late 1970's I took magic lessons from Tom Craven at Akron Univeristy and learned from him at the old Magic club that at one time was in Akron Ohio. I was a member of the Youngstown magician club too. I am a presenter now.
