Slack Mansion – Houdini Slept Here

The famous Slack Mansion is up for sale and for a reasonable price, you can pick up this piece of history settled in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco.

The San Francisco Examiner announced the mansion originally built for Judge Charles Slack and his wife, Charlotte, in 1891 is up for sale.

It was well known to the famous throughout the last century, including Barbra Streisand, Robin Williams and the late John F. Kennedy Jr.   Because it is built on bedrock, the famous earthquake of 1906 had no effect on the structure.

Mark Twain and Harry Houdini stayed in the home during their trips to California.  In fact, Houdini visited the San Francisco area four times and had a room in the stately mansion.

The home was most recently seen in the movie The Gangs of New York.  It is hard to believe it is going for a mere $57,000.

Oh, wait, that’s the amount of the taxes.  It’s really for sale at $4,400,000.  Our bad.  Sorry.

Read newspaper summaries of Houdini’s four appearances in San Francisco including his visit in 1923.  “This was his biggest.  At the age of 49 and in front of 30,000 watchers, he performed his famous ‘escape from the strait jacket while in mid-air’ at Third and Market streets.”
