Celebration Includes Tribute to Jews in Magic History

Manny Sperling

Toledo Congregation Etz Chayim is planning a magical finale to its 30th anniversary celebration next weekend.

The Orthodox Jewish synagogue was founded in December, 1974 and to celebrate the special birthday, the congregation has scheduled a weekend of observances concluding with a multimedia magic show performed by Manny Sperling of Cleveland.

Mr. Sperling?s show is targeted at an adult audience but will appeal to the kids.  His show will includes a multimedia introduction and segments honoring Jewish magicians of the past and present.  Mr. Sperling is well-known for his innovative shows for virtually all demographics: from tradeshows to school assemblies.

Rabbi Garsek included the show to end the special celebration ?on a lighter note and offer an activity that will bring families together.?  The presentation is based on Mr. Sperling?s research into Jews in the field of magic.

Mr. Sperling includes profiles of Houdini, the son of a rabbi, as well as contemporary magic stars such as David Copperfield (David Kotkin) and David Blaine.

Congregation Etz Chayim was founded in 1974 in a merger of three local congregations – Anshe Sfard, B’nai Jacob, and Sharei Zedeck.

Rabbi Garsek, 58, said the three synagogues joined forces because they saw that the local Jewish population was declining and that the three groups shared “the same purpose and goals.”
