Darren Romeo |
Darren Romeo Joins in Celebration. Visitors from across America joined with the stars of Branson this week for an official celebration in this small Ozark Mountain town of fewer than 7,000 residents to recognize the record-breaking achievement of having more than 100 live shows during the 2004 tourism season.
Siegfried & Roy Present Darren Romeo is one of the incredible live shows that line the streets of this once sleepy hamlet. Mayor Lou Schaefer thanked Mr. Romeo and the other stars for helping to make Branson America’s number one spot for live entertainment. “This year marks a defining achievement in our history,” Schaefer said. “We congratulate all of the 100 plus shows and all other businesses that entertain and serve the millions of visitors who come to the Branson area each year. It’s because of you that Branson is fun for everyone.”
Approximately 7 million people visit Branson each year. Of those, more than 75 percent see a show. Visitors can choose from country, pop, Big Band, Broadway, Rock ‘n Roll, gospel, patriotic, comedy, magic, dancing, and laser light shows. They can also see high-flying trapeze artists in psychedelic costumes, four-legged performers like tigers, horses (and even buffalos) along with themed shows like Spirit of the Dance, Legends in Concert, and 50’s At The Hop.

Don Brandfas |
A Look Back to the Not So Distant Past. The Coolidge Examiner had an interesting piece that speaks of the community?s pride in magicians. The paper occasionally looks back at the top stories of fifty, twenty-five, ten, five and one year earlier. Today, twenty-five years ago, the paper proudly announced:
Don Brandfas, a Coolidge magician, recently pulled off a trick that couldn’t be done but by one person each year. He has been named Magician of the Year by the Tucson Assembly of the Society of American Magicians. The Tucson Assembly of SAM was organized a little over three years ago and is part of an international organization that was formed in the early 1900s.
Check out Mr. Brandfas website. He?s still going strong. You can see it and some great slightly used magic for sale here.

Here He Goes Again |
Copperfield Hits the Road Again. After a brief stint of staying in one place for more than a night ? performing at the MGM Las Vegas for the last couple of weeks ? Mr. Copperfield is on his way to being another two months on the road. In advance of the trek through the western states, he has already started offered himself up to interviews with papers and television stations along the west coast.
Mr. Copperfield told an interviewer in Portland today that his current show is based upon his box-office record setting Broadway show titled “Dreams and Nightmares.”
?Under the advice of film director Francis Ford Coppola, Copperfield concentrated his landmark effort on imagery from throughout his life, including moments where he revealed his deepest hopes and fears. The success of that semi-autobiographical piece, which broke box-office records, inspired Copperfield to turn the idea around for his latest tour. The new show, dubbed “Grand Illusion,” will be performed twice Friday night and three times Saturday in Portland’s Keller Auditorium.?
The description of the illusions sounds very similar to last years touring show, An Evening of Grand Illusion.? As we mentioned last year, just about this time, there is no entertainer better at developing his own advance buzz than our friend David Copperfield. We predict, based on past experience, we will have incredible tie-ins with each market along his tour itinerary.
After all of these years, does Mr. Copperfield still enjoy it? Is it just a job? Is the magic gone? Does he care? Isn?t he so rich that magic is just a ?thing? to which he panders?
No. Like those of us who write and read Inside Magic, he?s hooked. When asked, he responded like one of us: “I love doing this show. … From my standpoint, things couldn’t be going better.”

The Nicholas Einhorn |
Nicholas Einhorn Predicts the Future. On Monday, the award-winning magician of stopped by the newsroom of a local UK paper to perform some magic tricks.
(Inside Magic, in an effort to provide full disclosure at all turns must admit that Mr. Einhorn?s book, The Art of Magic and Sleight of Hand, is one of our favorite books to introduce anyone to the world of magic).
According to the reporter, the writers decided to put his skill to a test: ?we challenged the professional illusionist to use his magic skills to predict the front page headline of this week’s newspaper before the story was even written.?
Talk about softballs. How great a challenge is that? Oh, no, please don?t throw me into that briar patch, Mr. Reporter. We?re sure the 29 year-old magician smiled (at least on the inside) when he heard the challenge.

One of the Best Magic Books Ever! |
Mr. Einhorn was probably also delighted when ITV asked him to perform in a regular ?magic slot? on the ITV late night show, Dan and Dusty. That is a nice perk for a magician who deserves it ? especially in light of the two big publicity magnets in the UK recently, Blaine and Brown.
Says Mr. Einhorn: “My magic isn’t about publicity stunts. You’re not going to see me being buried alive or frozen in a block of ice. I see magic as an art form and what I really love about it is shattering people’s expectations even the most cynical people.?
We will bring you the results of the prediction next week. Our money says Mr. Einhorn will pull it off.
