?       Casinos Try to Capture Mac and Rick’s Magic.  The Las Vegas Review documents the moves of several performers to capture the afternoon crowd and pull them to showrooms located on just the other side of the casino.  Mac King and Rick Thomas have proven the waters are safe for casinos looking to invest in afternoon shows.  After the failure of the Darren Romeo afternoon show to sustain a ticket price of $30.00, many casino owners shied away from the light of the day.  Mr. King and Mr. Thomas have done extraordinarily well with their afternoon shows, however.  Mr. King charges just over $18.00 for a reserved seat and Mr. Thomas receives just under the magic $30.00 mark for his best seats.  Read the full article here.

Penn Jillette Writes Non-Magic Novel.  Penn Jillette, the taller, talking half of the Penn & Teller duo, has been published by the prestigious St. Martin?s Press.  His new novel Sock has exposed him to the nation?s literary pages and revealed a sensitive, vulnerable side.  He has recounted the death of his parents and his discovery of Atheism as a comfort while his mother was dying.  You can read one of the pre-release articles in the Contra-Costa Times here.

 

?       Beheading Used By Magicians for Same Reason as Terrorists. Margaret Werth, who teaches art history at the University of Delaware, is the author of “The Joy of Life: The Idyllic in French Art, circa 1900.?  She is also a guest columnist in Newsday?s July 8th edition. She describes the image of the beheading act as used by the terrorist in Saudi Arabia, the early filmmakers, biblical history and of course magicians.  All use the horrific act for the same reason argues Ms. Werth.  The column fits well within the current debate among magicians on the propriety of guillotine and head choppers.  It is interesting and compelling reading.  You can find the full column here.

Mac King’s Magic in a Minute Debuts.  The comic strip features Mac King and his sidekick Lewis, a cute, comical monkey, demonstrating one of Mac King’s magic tricks. The trick is displayed in six or eight colorful informative boxes giving exact instructions on how to perform the trick incorporating the comedy of Mac King. Also included is The Secret — magic trick explanation. Each week Mac King’s comic strip will feature a different magic trick in different themes such as, “Banana Jujitsu” and “Freezin’ For No Reason,” just to name a few.   Good Luck, Mac!
