Latest Magic News – January 12, 2004

According to several magic news sources, Derek Dingle passed away yesterday, Sunday, in England from a stroke. Meir Yedid issued a special edition of his newly revised ? and outstanding ? Magic Times to cover the passing. Mr. Dingle has been such a tremendous influence on all of us that enjoy watching and performing close-up magic.

Paul Daniels held his latest Masterclass at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Sunday. His day-long education on the ways and means of making money in Magic was not only intense, it was worth the full price of the considerable admission fee. A full review will follow.

KVTU in Las Vegas is reporting that despite Siegfried?s recent comments, Roy?s condition is not rapidly improving and there is concern that he will not make a full-recovery from the tiger attack of October 3rd. The station reports: that despite ?Seigfried and manager Bernie Yuman?s continued appearances talking about how Horn is improving dramatically, giving the impression that it is only a matter of time before he’s up and frolicking with the white tigers again. However, insiders quoted in everything from the Las Vegas Review Journal to the National Enquirer say Horn’s injuries were so severe that a full recovery is doubtful.?

Forty year old police officer turned full-time magician Kevin Jones is featured in today?s Bozeman Daily Chronicle. The former Atlanta Police Officer moved with his family to Montana in 1997 where he worked as a Sheriff?s Deputy until just recently. Mr. Jones had been interested in magic since reading his first Houdini biography at the age of nine. Thirty-one years later, he decided to leave the Sheriff?s Office to take on Magic full-time.

The article quotes Mr. Jones as admitting, “It’s my first love anyway. The real magic is in the kids’ faces and the fun they have.”

When he is asked by adults that attend his shows what he does in real life, he responds, “This is my real life. I’m the magic man.”

Rev. David Bort, a 77 year old preacher comes clean with his alter-ego of ?Brandini? in today?s Bennington (VT) Banner. The minister celebrated his 50th anniversary of his ordination as an United Methodist Minister and tells the paper about his love for both the pulpit and the performing stage. Rev. Bort is a Vice President for the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Escape Artist Robert Gallup?s successful survival of an underwater chain escape is heralded in the latest Chinese papers. ?The viewers could even hear their own hearts beating, and counted the seconds for him, 1, 2, 3… Forty-six seconds later, Gallup freed himself from the manacles and chains and emerged from the water. Then to thunderous applause, he counted down the last seconds of 2003 to the amazed Chinese audience.? The effect was performed in Beijing on New Year?s Eve but is only now being reported in China View. The escape kicked-off Mr. Gallup?s ambitious Asia tour with presentations scheduled for this week in Shanghai and Beijing.
