Weapon of Mass Destruction of Hate in India: K.S. Ramesh

Karun Krishna – Prodigy

K.S. Ramesh is a self-taught Indian magician profiled in the New Kerala Daily News for his ability and goals to not only preserve magic but to use it for noble goals. Mr. Ramesh, a member of the Magic Circle, is based in Bangalore but has performed throughout India and around the world. He notes, “Magic was born in India, but over a period of time it has been developed in the West.” But “[w]ithout official patronage, magic is a dying art in India.”

To foster the love and practice of magic, Mr. Ramesh has started an academy in Bangalore to teach young people who want to learn magic either as a career path or an enjoyable pastime. “At the academy, I, along with other practicing magicians, impart the basic skills and techniques of the profession to these youngsters,”

There are 60 full-time members of the academy and all work to promote magic as a serious art form use to entertain.

Mr. Ramesh is against those who would use magic to dupe the laity or claim they have extraordinary powers and thus promote various superstitions.

Mr. Ramesh is against those who would use magic to dupe the laity or claim they have extraordinary powers and thus promote various superstitions. He combats this improper use of our art by traveling into the rural areas of India to show that magic as entertainment is “just sleight of hand. This discourages superstition and promotes rational thinking among people,” he says.

He hopes to use his talent to perform in Pakistan to be India’s “Weapon of Mass Destruction of Hate” between the two, often-warring countries.

Tom Craven Hits Southeastern Michigan Twice in One Week

Tom Craven

The hardest working man in magic, Tom Craven, is bringing two of his lectures to the greater Detroit area tonight (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday).

We know Mr. Craven from his incredibly helpful and practical column, ?Havenly Close-Up? which appears monthly in ?The Linking Ring? magazine as well as his lectures and performances at conventions and magic clubs around the country over the past 30 years. Anyone who has witnessed Mr. Craven’s lectures will attest that you will receive magic you can really use in front of a real audience. His routines are well-thought out, practical and effective.

Tonight, Mr. Craven will stop his tour cavalcade at Carlos Blades Garden City Magic Shop, in Garden City, Michigan. He’ll be teaching Ring & Rope magic, Joe Berg’s handling of the Puzzle Knot, Mental Shopper, Tom’s Groby Prediction, and much more. Two neat things about this lecture: first, all of the magic is done in a stand-up situation; and second, no cards or coins tricks will be used.

Tomorrow night, Mr. Craven will appear at the Ann Arbor Magic Club to present a totally different lecture for members and guests.

I have had the honor of seeing Mr. Craven lecture a couple of times and am so impressed that he is willing to give up tricks that he could easily market to his audience. You know from his columns and participation on the Ring2100 bulletin board that he truly cares about our art and his commitment is proven by the depth and professionalism of his contributions.

We’ll have full-coverage of Mr. Craven’s lectures here on Inside Magic so check back.

Magician to conjure up funds for charity

Paul Starr

Northern Ireland magician Paul Starr, from Gilford County Down, has set the goal of raising half a million pounds for Alzheimer’s Northern Ireland in memory of his late mother. Gertrude Crossan passed away in a nursing home in Portadown last month, having suffered from Alzheimer’s for ten years.

Mr. Starr told the Belfast Telegraph, “It is an awful disease. When my father died two years ago she did not even know it had happened. I want to do something in her memory and I am offering my services free of charge for fundraising shows throughout the province.”

He has a show scheduled and is looking for other venues interested in receiving his professional show in return for the chance to raise money for this worthy cause.
