Oz Pearlman is the ubiquitous magician seen on videos across the web all flowing from the font of magic that is Penguin Magic. When you click, ?Watch Movie? on the Penguin Magic website, you usually see Mr. Pearlman performing the routine. When you purchase an instant download effect, you will usually receive permission to watch Mr. Pearlman explain the secret and give you some tips on the best handling of the effect.

So what would an entire DVD of Mr. Pearlman be like? How does Inside Magic rate Mr. Pearlman’s Born to Perform Card Magic? Is it worth the price? Can you learn things differently or better than you could if you were reading a book from the library? If there are balloon animals, why don?t we have any balloon minerals? For the answer to many of these questions, please Read On . . .

I learned all of my sleight of hand from one man, Barry Gibbs. Before I met Mr. Gibbs at the age of 12, I knew two sleights: the Hindu shuffle; and a sleight in which I took great pride because I invented it, the Downs Palm. (Apparently T. Nelson Downs stole from me before I was born ? it could happen). Mr. Gibbs taught me the back palm, the front palm, the second deal, false shuffle and even the one-handed shuffle. He is left-handed so I learned my sleights left-handed. (Tim Quinlan: Bats Right, Throws Right, One Hand Shuffles Left, Smells Weird, Eats Like Pig).

Laurence Welk Show

I?m as dull as a documentary on Lawrence Welk and so I need something more than books to teach me. Sure, I?ve got the classics in my brick and plank bookshelves here at the Mystic Hollow Double-Wide Mansion in which I reside: Bobo on Coins, S.W. Erdnase and Lorayne, Giobbi, Braue and Hugard on Cards, and Tarbell on everything else. I also have a copy of everything Banachek and Whit Haydn have written. And I?ve really read these books but I?m inept. I was incompetent but I have started using Depends and no longer notice.

But, I definitely love my DVDs ? how sad does that sound, too much like Rainman? When I watch my DVDs, I learn so much. I need videos of the masters like Banachek to learn how to bend forks into a spaghetti-like mess (ironically the name of my first movie with Dom DeLuise ? never released in the U.S.) or Whit Haydn cause knives to change color and vanish from a well-secured hand (the second movie I made with Dom was called, the ?well-secured hands? and never released anywhere thanks to my payment of the demanded blackmail) or Bob Cassidy to read the minds of my audience. (For the record: I have never made a movie with Dom DeLuise with ?read? ?minds? or ?audience? in the title).

But enough about me and Dom DeLuise. Let?s talk about Mr. Pearlman.

Mr. Pearlman is a young man with seemingly endless energy. I think that is part and parcel of being a young man in magic. He is excited about what he does and seems excited about teaching you and me how to perform the sleights and the effects he presents.

Mr. Pearlman takes us through a several sleights and flourishes that all come together in four routines. You?ll learn how to hold the cards with a basic Mechanic?s Grip, a Biddle Grip and all of the breaks and lifts you?ll need to do a very nice Ambitious Card routine. He teaches you how to do the Hindu Shuffle, the Classic Pass (this is very well taught, finally) a Double Undercut, the Elmsley Count and various fans and flourishes.
