Aaron Balcom – Teen Idol Grows Up!

The Incredible Aaron Balcom

Like most people who practice the art of illusion, Aaron Balcom?s interest began at a very young age. At five years old, his parents took him to see a magician in Toledo, Ohio and he chose Aaron to assist him on stage. From that very moment, his fate was set?the interest in magic had begun.

At seven, his parents gave him a ?Houdini Magic Set? for Christmas and he began performing feats of mystery for anyone who would watch.

Not long after he was going to see other live performers, meeting them after the shows and getting advice. And every weekend he would faithfully visit the local magic shop, eagerly buying every gimmick and how-to book he that was of interest or use to him.

Now performing at local events and birthday parties with a small ?stand-up comedy magic act out of a suitcase,? Aaron was also busy learning difficult sleight of hand and dreaming about breaking into the world of large stage illusions.

However, that dream wasn?t far off. In 1996, with the assistance of his parents, Aaron purchased his first major stage illusion. Known as ?The Temple of Benares,? his assistant would enter a small representation of an East-Indian temple, and half dozen swords would be inserted in every direction. The cabinet would be opened?and she was gone!

Known as ?The Temple of Benares,? his assistant would enter a small representation of an East-Indian temple, and half dozen swords would be inserted in every direction. The cabinet would be opened?and she was gone!

Great Illusions

Aaron?s dream was to take the same illusions everyone was doing, and recreate them with a style never before seen. And that?s just what he did. Only several months later at a talent show, Aaron Balcom premiered his ground-breaking ?rock-star like style? to the world.

Using a current chart-topping song, with modern-day costuming, flashy colored lights and a lot of stage smoke?Aaron brought the audience to a standing ovation and found his niche in the world of grand illusion!

At that point, Aaron made two important decisions: His first being to pursue the career of a professional stage illusionist; and the second being to stick with the incredible performance style that he dreamt up and carried out.

From then on, Aaron was slowly building his stage illusion show, one piece of equipment at a time. He was combining elements from his birthday party shows, and the large illusions to assure that audiences always experienced a full show.

Just a few short years later, Aaron was beginning to win awards for sleight of hand, getting countless newspaper and magazine write-ups, as well as appearing on television and radio.

One of the first competitions he was to win was one that Aaron almost didn?t enter in the first place.

Ready for the Big Time

?I heard this song on the radio on a Tuesday,? says Aaron. ?After listening to it, everything clicked. On Wednesday, I went to the competition meeting and entered myself. I designed the act on Thursday, rehearsed Friday and finally competed on Saturday. Needless to say, I won by a landslide!?

Audiences were now seeing and understanding what Aaron Balcom was all about. Gone were his days as a birthday party magician making silk handkerchiefs disappear, he was now putting on lavish stage productions that took large crews of people hours to set up.

Booking performances as a ?Teen Pop Illusionist,? he catered to the teenage fans of musical artists such as Britney Spears or N Sync. Using their music and adopting features from their live concerts, Aaron was able to create breathtaking performances for an entirely new generation.

Not long after, Aaron finally realized another goal, that of an author. Having always had an interest, and knack for writing, he decided it was time for the magic community to hear what he had to say. Between 1999-2002, Aaron published three books on the art of illusion, all describing new and incredible illusions as well as methods for practitioners to further enhance their performances. All three publications have sold tremendously world-wide and continue to be sought out by amateurs and professionals alike.

After the ?Teen Pop Illusionist? grew up, Aaron Balcom went all out and created the largest grand-scale illusion production in his home state of Michigan, and one of the largest in the country.

Carrying a semi-truck full of equipment, ranging from a 3100 square foot stage, lighting, trussing, curtains, backdrops, audio and much more, the show was engineered to entertain the masses!

This new show also meant new and incredible illusions to replace some of the older effects that made him a professional. He also added fancy computerized light shows, pyrotechnics, a larger scenic design and much, much more!

Because of the massive project, not only was Aaron able to book more performances in a wider variety of venues, but he was also gaining more notoriety and more media coverage than ever before.

So what?s next for Aaron Balcom?the kid from Detroit who dreamt of becoming a professional illusionist, and then made it happen virtually overnight? You?ll just have to wait and see. But I promise you, it will be something you?ll never forget!
